Message it also moves side to side on the small end. When there is play on the big end (which is what you were asking about), it allows the rod to move side to side on the crank journal. This lets the rod move slightly away from the centerline of the piston so the force of combustion will push the piston down, but since the rod isn't totally centered with respect to the piston, combustion will push the piston down and it will want to cock sideways in the cylinder. It wont literally cock sideways because the bearing will hold it straight up and down, but the force wont be balanced. But that's the only reason you have a rod side clearance. However, if you have a little too much gap in there, I personally wouldn't be so concerned considering how much new rods are.
